From Disconnection to Harmony: Healing Through Mind-Body Awareness

Linear versus circular

Holistic Coaching: Beyond the Mind and Emotions

The more I coach, the more I realize the importance of coaching the whole person—not just the mind or emotions, but the entire being: mind, heart, gut, limbs, and spirit. One of my specialities is using Positive Intelligence to uncover mindsets developed in youth that no longer serve us. Interestingly, these mindsets are not solely mental but also physical. By becoming aware of our reactions under pressure and recognizing our physical triggers, we can facilitate mental transformation.

Balancing Emotions and Rationality

Expressions like “follow your heart,” “trust your gut,” and “connect with your intuition” highlight this connection. I struggled with these concepts because my mind always tried to rationalize everything. Many of us believe that emotions should not be brought to work because they can interfere and create messiness, or that showing emotions is a sign of weakness. However, there is a balance between letting emotions take over and completely ignoring them. A healthier approach is to acknowledge and notice your emotions, recognize bodily signs before escalation, press “pause,” and then decide how to respond.

Recognizing Disconnection

In today's world, the mind and body are often disconnected. I experienced this disconnection for many years, leading to numerous health problems. Despite these issues, I persisted, committed to my work and the image of being a strong, independent woman who could “do it all.”

Despite various attempts to improve my health—different diets, sleep routines—nothing seemed to help. My energy and mood were low. While I noticed the pains, I didn’t delve deeper. My body was asking for a slower pace and a healthier lifestyle, but I didn’t listen. Instead, I used band-aid solutions, which only work temporarily. Healing requires a holistic approach, addressing both mind and body.

Starting with Daily Check-Ins

During a recent Masterclass on Finding Calm in Stressful Times (which I will repeat this month), a participant asked, “But what if we don’t have any connection? Where do we start?” This was a great question, one I would have asked a few years ago.

We start by doing daily check-ins with our body every couple of hours. Close your eyes and go inward. What’s happening? Are you thirsty? Hungry? Do you have a slight headache, tense shoulders, or tired legs? Are your arms relaxed? Identify any positive or negative emotions and where they reside in your body. Not feeling much is also an option. Approach this practice as an observer, curious, without trying to change anything. Just be fully present to what is. Practising this will provide clues to what you need.

Trusting Our Bodies Again

The next step is to trust our bodies again, listen to what they say, and take action. Why? Because our bodies are evolutionary wonders, absorbing and filtering millions of data points to pick up what’s important. The brain has over 100 million neurons, the gut 500 million, and the heart between 40-120 million. Ninety percent of serotonin—the happy hormone—is made in our gut. People with conditions like anxiety, depression, and autism often have gut problems. We can’t treat the mind, gut, or heart in isolation. Western medicine is increasingly recognizing the need for a holistic approach, something the Chinese have known for centuries. Proper nutrition, sleep, and exercise/movement are crucial self-care practices that influence our performance, well-being, and relationships.

To truly thrive, we must embrace the mind-body connection. By understanding and honouring this link, we can achieve greater health, resilience, and fulfilment. Let’s start today by listening to our bodies, acknowledging our emotions, and taking mindful actions that nurture our whole being. The journey to well-being begins with one step: awareness.
