Leadership and the Journey to the Self

I don't think many people would naturally pair leadership and spiritualityin the same sentence. And yet, hear me out. I use "spirituality" in the broadest, non-religious sense: a journey toward deeper connection and inner harmony.
Leaders often come to me seeking more calm and inner peace, more clarity in their decision-making, and less self-doubt or self-criticism. They want the confidence to set boundaries, to speak up, and to feel energizedinstead of stressed.
At its core, life is a journey—one that sooner or later moves beyond the transactional sphere and becomes a quest to find the Self. This journey is about:
- Connecting with who you truly are (the authentic, unchanging core you were born with).
- Defining what you stand for (your values).
- Aligning with the impact you want to have on this planet (your purpose).
This alignment allows for greater connection, fulfillment, and, ultimately, more impactful leadership.
Where the Journey Begins: Chaos
The coaching journey often begins with confusion, even chaos. Something is not working, but we ignore the inner alarm until it starts interfering too much with our lives. We hit a crossroads. Sometimes, life stops waiting and starts piling on the challenges until we finally stop and say, “Okay, I need help.”
For me, that breaking point was feeling trapped in a Superwoman Hamster Wheel. I was flying in a frenzy, working endless hours, and meeting everyone’sneeds but my own. I was folding laundry at 11 PM, cooking healthy meals, and supporting clients—once, even on the evening of December 31st! Talk about a lack of boundaries...
The effect? A grumpy, exhausted, irritable, and sick Karin. The joy had been completely sucked out of my life by that fast-spinning wheel.
The Four Steps to Finding Your Harmony
This journey requires courage. Here are the steps I’ve seen countless leaders, including myself, take:
Step 1: Acknowledge the Need for a New Way
The first and hardest step is acknowledging the confusion and the desperate need for a different path. You have to be honest: your old way isn't working anymore.
Step 2: Decide to Get Support
For many, this is a huge hurdle that we postpone. It can feel like weakness or failure. For years, I told myself, “I’m a strong, independent woman. I don’t need help. I’ll figure it out on my own—it’s what I’ve always done.”
That last line is the killer. If “what you’ve always done” isn't working now, clinging to it is not strength. True strength and resilience isn’t trudging alone, lost, and overwhelmed through the jungle. It’s stopping, taking stock of what you need, and finding support.
Once I crossed that bridge, a whole new world opened up—a world of supportive teachers, coaches, and communities. No one said you have to do “life” by yourself.Let's walk together.
Step 3: Find the Right Guide
Finding the right coach or teacher can be tricky, but I believe it’s also about timing. The guide you need now may change in a few months or years. My approach is to do some research, look for who is on my path, and be open to the opportunities and people I meet.
My personal journey has been a tapestry of therapy, coaching, Positive Intelligence, somatic training, leadership development, meditation, and breathwork. The beauty is, the journey never ends!
Step 4: Walk Your Own Path
The coach is there to guide, help, and ask the challenging questions, but ultimately, you walk your own path. You learn to trust yourself. You align your cognitive intelligence with your emotional intelligence, and you follow your heart.
The results of my own four-year journey are a deepening of awareness, vulnerability, and confidence in who I am. More than anything, it’s a feeling—a harmonious blend of calm, excitement, joy, and fulfilment.
The Meaning of "Spiritual Leadership"
This feeling is what I mean by spirituality in a leadership context: finding harmony within yourselfand with your environment, connecting with your purpose, and living your values. Paradoxically, on this journey to the Self, our focus shifts from "me" to "we".
It’s easy to feel this harmony in times of peace. But in times of "war," when outer or inner chaos strikes, finding that balance, joy, and clarity is even more critical. That is where our real growth and awakening happens, and we take a powerful step closer to our most authentic selves while leading and serving others.
