From Me to We: Why Team Purpose Drives Impact

Team of People

Your personal mission. What are you born to do on this planet? It's a big question, and it's okay if the answer isn't immediately clear. My own purpose has evolved over time, shaped by life's shifts and my developing skills. I still remember the lightning bolt moment at 26 when I stepped in front of a class of 8th graders. I was terrified, yet simultaneously, I felt I had come home. This was where I was meant to be, empowering future leaders.

As life progressed, with two young children, my energy and priorities shifted. The most powerful moments in teaching had become the deep, after-class discussions. So, I trained as a counselor, going a level deeper to help these future leaders understand themselves and their relationships.

Now, my purpose has shifted again, this time to coaching. My inner voice told me it was time to discover more about the world and myself. My deeper reason? To work with current generations of leaders and teams to have a greater impact, spreading love and sustainability. We can't wait for future generations to solve global issues; we must act now.

The Purpose of Your Team and Organization

Beyond personal purpose, there's the critical work we do within larger systems. We cannot act alone; attempting to do so leads to lower impact, higher stress, and burnout.

It's crucial to acknowledge that the journey to powerful team dynamics often begins in individual self-awareness. Leaders can only effectively guide their teams as far as their own inner work and understanding have taken them. Cultivating personal reflection is not just a prerequisite for strong leadership, but a continuous process that can happen both before and alongside the development of the collective 'we'.

As leaders gain clarity on their strengths and how to manage their energy, the next crucial step is managing relationships. The era of the heroic, solo leader is over. The complexity of today's challenges and the speed of change make it impossible for one person to manage alone. Today's problems will be solved by teams, not individuals. While personal purpose is vital, it must align with the greater purpose of those you serve. The best leaders build strong relationships and create systems that empower teams to work as effectively as possible.

Leadership and coaching have evolved from IQ to EQ, and now to WeQ: working smart together, leveraging collective and collaborative intelligence (Systemic Team Coaching 2025).

Why Team Coaching Matters Now More Than Ever

How can your team create more value? How are you preparing them for the inevitable challenges ahead? The reality is, we're burning out individuals, teams, organizations, and our world. How do we infuse more well-being, joy, and impact? We must go beyond individual skills to tackle challenges collectively. None of today's complex issues can be solved in isolation; they are all interconnected.

A team-centric model requires leaders to ask: How effective are we at managing our teams? We need a fundamental shift in how we think, act, and behave.

Within the realm of relationships lies the greater purpose of the team and organization. What is the collective, collaborative purpose that can only be achieved by working together? How is your team more than the sum of its parts or a collection of individuals? Teams are formed by purpose, not just by people. People are there to fulfill the team's purpose.

The starting question then becomes: Who does your team serve and create value for? What will your stakeholders need differently in 2-3 years that they can't achieve without your team? What does the future demand that your team needs to work on today? The answers to these questions will redefine your focus.

This realization fuels my expanded purpose. While I'll continue one-on-one coaching, I am now committed to team coaching. I want to help teams embrace collective growth, becoming learning systems that continuously increase their capacity to achieve more.
