The 3C Approach to Authentic Leadership

The more I coach, the more I realise there are three basic ingredients to authentic leadership. Authentic leadership is your ability to be the best leader you can be, staying true to who you are as a person, leading from your mission, vision, values and strengths. In times of change and stress, we risk losing ourselves. The 3Cs - leading with calm, clarity and confidence, will allow you to return to who you are as a leader and as a person.

The Story of Anna

Meet Anna – on the surface, she seems to have mastered the art of navigating the complexities of her professional life with grace and determination. However, beneath her polished exterior lies a different narrative. Her days unfold as a whirlwind of meetings, deadlines, and strategic decisions, and the weight of her responsibilities often feels overwhelming.

Anna's mind is a constant juggling act, trying to strike a balance between the demands of her team, the expectations of her boss, and the overarching needs of the organization. The pressure is unrelenting, and there are moments when she feels like she can barely keep her head above water.

As the day transitions into evening, the chaos doesn't cease for Anna. She finds herself unintentionally snapping at her partner, burdened by guilt for doing so. Her partner, in turn, grows weary of being at the receiving end of her stress. Even during dinner, Anna struggles to be fully present; her mind wanders to the challenging conversation awaiting her with a team member the next day. Navigating these discussions is tricky due to differences in cultural norms and expectations.

The realization hits her – continuing down this path is unsustainable - it's negatively impacting her performance, well-being, and relationships. She doesn’t want to lead and live in this way.

Amidst this turbulence, Anna yearns for a sense of control, calmness, and clarity. She wishes to communicate with confidence and without fear of judgment. Realizing the need for more balance in her life, she aims to set better boundaries and focus on what truly matters – being present for her family and dedicating more time to strategy and vision instead of constantly extinguishing fires set by others.

Anna can do work on her goals through the 3C Approach to Authentic Leadership. This roadmap will empower her - remind her of who she is, what she wants, where she’s going and how she wants to fulfil her purpose.

1. Cultivating Calm

In survival mode, our brains often resort to freeze, fight, or flight responses, hindering access to deeper wisdom and intuition. The first step in the 3C Approach is to gain a sense of CALM. While exercise is a powerful stress release, even a brief walk in nature, playing with your cat, or a moment of meditation can make a significant difference. Additionally, tapping into your senses for a mere 10 seconds several times a day can bring a much-needed sense of calm. This foundation of tranquility is crucial for effective decision-making.

2. Embracing Clarity

Once you've achieved calm, the path opens up for CLARITY. Start by crafting a clear vision, working out the details, and vividly visualizing it. A well-defined vision acts as a compass, guiding you in the right direction. Saying "yes" to certain commitments should prompt reflection on what needs to be said "no" to – prioritization is key. Identifying and challenging self-sabotaging thoughts is another aspect of clarity. Thoughts like "Am I good enough?" or "It needs to be perfect" can hinder progress. Self-awareness allows you to choose a positive mindset when faced with setbacks.

3. Building Confidence

The third step in the 3C Approach is CONFIDENCE. This emanates from taking small, intentional steps toward your vision. Acknowledge that the journey might be challenging, but trust that you possess the resources and resilience to make your vision a reality. Confidence grows as you learn from failures, realizing they aren't as daunting as feared. The synergy of calm and clarity enhances decision-making, further fuelling your confidence as a leader.

In Conclusion

As Anna navigates the challenges of leadership, personal growth, and finding her voice, she strives to harmonize her professional and personal worlds. Her journey is a testament to strength and resilience, as she remains determined to carve her unique path to success and fulfilment.

Now, the question is: What will you do? The 3C Approach is not just a strategy for Anna; it's a blueprint for anyone seeking to enhance their leadership journey. By cultivating calm, embracing clarity, and building confidence, you can transform the way you lead and live. It's time to embark on your own path to becoming a more effective and authentic leader.
